About Us

The Kelly Yang Project is an award-winning writing and debate program in Hong Kong for students ages 2-17. Launched at Hong Kong International School in 2005, we teach students to become creative thinkers, exceptional writers, and confident speakers.

KYP is the top after-school 445525fab2d2c1551382001453writing and debate program in Hong Kong. We excel at teaching writing and debate because we are real writers and debaters. Our founder and director, Kelly Yang, is a children’s author and columnist for the South China Morning PostKelly has also been published in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Atlantic. Because our teachers are real writers, the way we teach writing is different from the way writing is taught at other learning centres in Hong Kong.

In addition, KYP’s debating program is unparalleled in quality and content. Our debate classes are led by expert debaters. The way we teach debate is not from a textbook but from experience. As such, our students consistently win Hong Kong’s top debating tournaments (see Student Achievements). We’re proud to be Hong Kong’s top debating centre.

Under the guidance of KYP teachers, our students routinely score in the 95th percentile on the SSAT and SAT and win international writing and speech awards. Our students have been admitted to: Deerfield, Andover, Exeter, St. Paul’s School, Lawrenceville, Eton, and other top boarding schools in the US and UK. For colleges, our students have been admitted to Yale, Harvard, Stanford, UPenn, NYU, Columbia, and other top universities around the world.

More importantly, KYP students don’t just get in — they succeed in these schools. That’s because their writing, debate, and public speaking foundations are rock solid, having gone through our program from a young age. Moreover, an integral part of all KYP classes is teaching children to be self-motivated. We know when our students go off to boarding school or university, they can’t take us with them. And that’s a good thing. So we teach them to be self-motivated and self-reliant.

Today, KYP is a hotspot for creativity, debate, and excellent writing. KYP’s impressive student body makes it a one-of-a-kind learning center. The passion, care, and professional writing and debating experience of the teachers also make KYP special. Most of all, the fun and excitement of a writing program built by a real writer exclusively for kids is why our program works.

Don’t just take our word for it. Read our students’ writing. Read our teachers’ writing. See our teachers debate. Come see for yourself why we’re the top English writing and debate centre in Hong Kong!

Letter from the Director:

IMG_8840Dear parents,

I fell in love when I was eight years old. My love had a sharp point on one end and an eraser on the other: a pencil, poised over a blank sheet of paper. As a child, there is nothing more miraculous than discovering the magic of words: The fact that I can write something funny and someone will laugh! Something sad, and someone will cry!

I wanted to give this gift to kids, which is why I started KYP ten years ago. My goal is to inspire children to become better writers, global thinkers, and powerful speakers.

These days, being able to communicate effectively is essential whether your kids are going to grow up to be authors, lawyers, or bankers. The ability to write well is a must-have skill in the modern world. It will get you in to the finest academic institutions in the world. But more than that, writing is also the ONLY thing that will ensure you'll do well there. No score or admissions packaging can guarantee the same sense of security.

More importantly, writing is fun! That's why I write, because there's nothing more interesting than letting your imagination fly! Don't believe me? Come to KYP on a Saturday afternoon and see for yourself!

Since 2005 when we first started, a lot has changed. I  became a mom, and now, as a mother of three, I know first-hand the importance of having classes which stimulate and inspire children. Being a mom helped me better understand children: what they need, and how to motivate them. All of this helped me to develop KYP into what it is today: a successful thinking, writing and debating program in English and Chinese that helps students from primary school all the way until university; one which is equal parts exhilarating and effective.

A lot of things have remained the same, like the fact that I still give my all to teaching. I teach every single day. I love it; teaching is what gets me up in the mornings. In addition, I also oversee the entire KYP curriculum, from designing lesson plans to making sure student writing is actually improving. I work with every member of my team to make sure we're delivering the best possible classes on the market. I welcome parents to come and speak to me at any time. Since it's my name on the door, for me, the quality always comes first. You can rest assured that I am working hard every day to create the very best program to benefit my kids and yours.

Of course, none of this could work if it wasn't for the huge support of parents, students, and grandparents in the KYP community. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to do what I do -- to write interesting lesson plans, design and execute an innovative and systematic curriculum in English and Chinese, and most of all, work with awesome kids!

Yours,

Kelly Yang
